What are the different ways to link?
Choosing the right type of link makes for a better experience for your workplace members. Let's explore the different ways!
Content Blocks
In the Content Builder, you can make any Content Block into a link.
Icons, images, and even Headers and Paragraphs can be made so that when a user clicks on it, they will be directed to a website of your choice.
Best Practice: Use Link Rows
The Link Row content block is designed to display a large icon and a line of text which is ideal for creating a link to any website, email address or phone number.
It is large enough to click on when on the mobile app, and distinctive enough that member's won't click on it by accident.
To make a content block into a link:
- In the Editor step, drag and drop a suitable content block into the Layout
- Select the content block. The Action bar appears next to it.
- Select Link in the Action bar menu
- Choose how to open the link and enter the link url
Types of Links
There are different types of links that are appropriate for different situations.
-
- In platform: select a content item in the Activate platform
- Email Address: enter an email address
- Phone Number: enter a phone number
- Website: enter any external website, which can be opened in a browser (External) or in-app (Webview).
When to use Webviews (In App)
Webviews are useful when you want users to stay within the Activate app. You can show the information on any external webpage in similar to viewing information on an internal Page. The information on the external webpage may change frequently, which means the content builder does not need to monitor and update information on internal Pages accordingly.
When to use External Links
Use an External Link when you want the user to open the link in another app the user has installed, such as Maps, Uber, Calendar, or in a new, separate browser window. The user will be asked whether they want to open the link in a new app and leave Activate.
In summary, External Links clearly distinguish between internal and externally created information, while Webviews offer a seamless view of external information from within the Activate application.
Create a Webview Link
To open a content block in Webview:
- Select Link in the Action bar of the Content Editor
- Select External Link
- Select In app browser
- Enter the link to open
Create an External Link
- On desktop: The link will open in a new browser window or tab
- On mobile: The link will ask to open in a new browser window or the default app for that type of link (maps, calendar, etc). This depends on the user's settings on their mobile device.
